It was a good story, with excelent performances, but I wouldn't call it scary, it's kinda drama film, but not terrorific... that's what dissapointed me...
GREAT movie! Reminds me of The Others. There two are probably the only horror movies I enjoyed watching.
Very moody suspense drama. It is dark and chilling, but if you think a horror movie has to be gory you will be disappointed, this one is really scary because it spooks the mind. It has a lot of good twists and turns. It is truly unpredictable.
The Orphanage is a Thriller which gives some wonderfully tense moments and really made me jump on a couple of occasions.
Not your average ghost story, this is a beautifully created horror, whilst managing to steer away from predictable route, so many take and instead providing a genuine realistic account of an unknown world.
Excellent movie! I don't want to say to much because the plot has a few unexpected twists and turns; but I found the story very well crafted with thrills and drama. A must see in my opinion.
Not what I expected at all.. but great anyway. More of an adult-drama with a supernatural foundation than a horror movie.
besides the fact that it is in spanish and reading subtitiles the enitre movie it was really good...
even though the enter moveie i had to read subtitles, it ws actually really good....i wouldnt have seen it if it wasnt for amber...
The plot is a bit predictable and the director could've taken some more hints from Del Toro but at it's best it's quite scary in a good way.
even tho i had to read subtitles through the whole thing...i really liked this movie! idon't know why... the mask on the one kid is creepy tho...
I'm a big fan of horror movies, so I have seen quite a bunch of horror movies from different countries, and let me tell you that this movie was just beyond every other thing you've seen so far. While the story is not really original (It revolves around ghosts and death), the script, the directing and the acting takes the movie to another level. This isn't about scary creatures or unrealistic monsters or creeps, it's all about scary thoughts. The use of light and shadow is so well done and the atmosphere was so dark and eerie that jumped from my seats a couple of times. I don't want to give spoilers but go to watch it mentally prepared and expecting the unexpected. But you'll still get scared.
Due to the fact that I'm pretty jaded nowadays, horror flicks (and particularily newer ones) seldom have any big or lasting effect on me. This movie, however, was a definite exception. Because not only was it well-acted, beautifully scored and skillfully directed, but it actually managed to scare the living daylight out of me. Not once, but several times. Having said that, I'm both happy and regretful that I saw it. Happy because it was so much better than I had expected, yet regretful because I'm now gonna have trouble sleeping for the next few nights. Then again, I suppose that just means that the movie served its purpose. It also taught me that Spanish film-making is not to be underestimated, nor looked upon with the slightest ounce of prejudice. Because where its Hollywood counterparts have a tendency to fail, this one certainly suceeded with its brilliant combination of psychological horror, engaging melodrama, a believable plot and last but not least, a great ending that actually makes a lot of sense. In other words, a must-see!
a wonderfully crafted film! i would say that it sides more in the drama category then horror...but it was still well done.
Loved this movie. It's a great suspense/thriller/horror. If you don't mind reading subtitles which you shouldn't you could all use a little culture watch this movie!
There was no doubt in my mind that Guillermo del Toro had something to do with this film from the moment I first saw a US teaser trailer. However, I was surprised at how far beyond the bounds of Spanish horror/fantasy this film was carried by its dedicated cast and revolutionary crew. Eerie, suspenseful, atmospheric, moving... I hid, I laughed, I cried. Bayona's feature-length debut is nothing short of a masterpiece.
I wated a we bit more pace for the first hour, but i did like this film. It wasn't a horror, more of a thriller mystery and done well. This ihasa lovely mix of tragedy, the reality of some things are shocking like the reason the kids are left in the first place/disappear. But this is realisti, the way the mother character handles it is realistic, and she is strong which i found endearing. This film was enjoyed by both me and my mum who just happened to be around when i started it and she wouldn't leave till it was done. She love a good film, but finding one that doesn't have her makig coffee after 8 minutes is not easy. I look forward to more of this fresh style, the only thing i woud have liked is a bit more colour in it, there is an increase late on in the film but i think i'd like to set the starting level a touch higher as it can fee a little bleached sometimes. But that is asthetics, i thought the film was great. watch it.
It's so refreshing to finally see a good horror movie! This genre has been seriously slacking, with the retarded Saws and Hostels and the rest of the torture porn bunch. It was time to give up the American crap, and go to Spain, where they apparently remember how to make high-quality horror flicks.
The Orphanage is the most genuinely scary film I've seen in years. And it's not just the cheap-surprising-jump scares (although it has its fair share of those too), but the most chilling and creepy parts of the film have so much thought behind them, and such a relevance to the story that the frights come at a pace that's almost poetic. The film is very reminiscent of "The Others", and also has some throwbacks to 2006's masterpiece "Pan's Labyrinth" (Del Toro's previous endeavor, though he didn't direct this one), and that is some superior company to be in. It's not really any worse-made than either of those films, but perhaps that it came later gives a slight edge to "The Others". But, I can easily say that this is the best horror movie since the days of "The Sixth Sense" and "The Others".
This movie was really interesting and some parts were really scary such as the "jackadi game". The actress was excellent but the negative points are the length, the father's chracter without substance and the ending...
Absolutely positivly beyond any shadow of a doubt one of the scariest movies I've ever seen in my life. I know I had bad things to say about Pan's Labryinth earlier about how you had to read the whole movie, but in this one the important parts that you need to pay attention to, there is no dialouge so you're good. If you have a chance definitly go out and rent this bad boy. You'll scream a lot.
It's like The Ring mixed with a sprinkle of Pan's Labyrinth.
As far as ghost story mystery films go, it's very competent. Not incredible and I'm not in any hurry to rush out and see it again, but it's a good watch and very well made.
Personal enjoyment: 7/10
Actual quality as a film: 7/10
this movie was AWESOME i just wish that it was in english so i didn't have to read the subtitles the whole frikkin time but all well i lived it was a really good movie!
chiller from spain, a son disapears and the mother has thoughts about the house, that was a former prphanage, has something to do with his disapearence, some nice moments and touches throughout, and a few genuinly creepy mments
Not bad but that kind of film has been done and redone by the japs and the americans. This may be good, but it lacks a hell of a lot of originality.

Rente ayer la pelicula y me ha encantado. No me esperaba tanto! Si me fue un poco predecible en algunos momentos, pero no dejo de sorprenderme. Mas que una pelicula de horror y/o suspenso, es una viva representacion de lo que es cine y muy bien hecho.
Actually Lovecyn4eve I agree it slowed down a bit but it was a beautiful ending showing that she eventually had to die to get her child back and that the supernatural were looking for someone to take care of them. That scene of Thomas walking towards her I must say that was quite frightening that will be in a dream of mine soon I'd say not good.
This was an amazing movie. I loved it. I have to say the scariest part was honestly the home videos. They were jsut freaky in their own way.

Beautifully shot, great atmosphere, stunning score with sound effects & suspenseful moments that makes it a creepy ghost film but with a plot hole & a weak ending.I was expecting a shocking finale & great twist. The film manage to get the audience jumping at times which is a good thing.
