Jesus Christ! I know that Steven Spielberg is technically just a commercial director, but it never occured to me Clint Eastwood
    could 1-up him in film-making...

You cannot lead these men unless you are prepared to do what is necessary to defeat evil. Gotham. As Gotham's favored son you will be ideally placed to strike at the heart of criminality.

Gotham's time has come. Like Constantinople or Rome before it the city has become a breeding ground for suffering and injustice.
It is beyond saving and must be allowed to die. This is the most important function of the League of Shadows. It is one we've performed for centuries. Gotham... must be destroyed.

This movie is the most depressing thing I've seen in a while. Very good, and worth watching, but stay away from razers for a while afterwards.

Although this was filmed from a different perspective than Flags, this is a much, much better telling of the events of that battle.
I wasn't bored by the screenplay like Flags.

This compelling and emotionally engaging war movie that tells the Japanese perspective about the battle of Iwo Jima. It is one of my favorite war movies for its subtle tones and meticulous planning. Clint Eastwood reflects upon the plight and bravery of Japanese soldiers in a bold and unpretentious way.
The plot is comprehensive showing in-depth strategies, brutality and futility of war. Ken Watanabe has given a stirring performance.

Classic. + Eastwood's "Flags Of Our Fathers", the pair of which represent a two-sided telling of the war

It took me some time to get into it, but the last hour grabbed me by the throat.
General Kuribayashi (played by the handsome ;) Ken Watanabe) personifies a true leader: he will always stay in front of his people.
What I'm trying to say is that in every war, the people that start it at the top get away unharmed, and the people who haven't chosen for it, the civillians, have to sacrifice themselves.
In the end there are no good or bad parties, both sides fight for what they think is right.

Ótimo fime, filmado e atuado do lado japonês da batalha, da guerra. ideia de clint de filmar os dois lados foi muito boa. Um bom filme de guerra, supera o flags of our fathers.

letters from iwo jima was profound, beautiful , and devastating. clint eastwood did a spectacular job. this film was so visually stunning i could help but pause frames to make mental snapshots. not often do i see a film that takes such a l look at war that isn't disney-fied and patronizing(pearl harbor). the soul searching characters made this film breathtakingly humane but at the same time brutal. it was refreshing to hear the side of the story that was told in the film.
i learned that this film is not for everyone. many people i love who have a strong emotional connection to ww2 did not want to see this film, they didn't want to know this story.
at the beginning of the film it was quite hard to get wrapped up in it. at the end of the film it pulled a gone with the wind on me and i kept thinking it was going to end. i kept hoping certain parts would be the end and i could be totally blown away by the film. but when the final credits rolled i had to remind myself of the things that made the film great. but to me what you see right before the credits is what makes the viewer say "wow that was powerful". Eastwood HAD the ability to make that last moment one of the most brilliant
none the less definitely in the top five of 2006. definitely.
totally deep in ways that other war movies don't get.
not every film are the characters forced to face their inevitable death, and face it with courage, and honor. that's what made this film so spectacular. it dealt with what each character felt was honor.

World War II is a very dramatic time for the U.S. but to see it told from the Japanese point of view makes the movie more heartfelt. It really gives you more of an appreciation for the soldiers that are placed in war situations who not only defend their country but their very lives.

Wow, I've seen a lot of this with sub titles and I really didn't mind reading all of that. The movie was so interesting and filled with great history. Also, hey, Clint Eastwood is awesome at any position he is in (actor, writer, director).

Realistic take on the invasion of Iwo Jima during World War II. Some very serious truths about any war, even Iraq and fghanistan right now...sad...

Filmed seemingly back-to-back with Flags of Our Fathers, Letters From Iwo Jima tells the same story?sort of. It?s been said time and time again that the history books are written by the winners. Well, in this case, we get a slightly more even tale when you combine the two films. Letters tells the story of the other side of the battle for Iwo Jima. A horde of Japanese troops face insurmountable odds and inevitable death with honor as the American troops come crashing down upon them.

Instead of being told as three separate, yet thematically linked timelines, Letters from Iwo Jima?s story is told through letters sent from the soldiers on the battlefield. I liked this storytelling a bit more than the flashback mode because you were given a much clearer insight into the minds of the soldiers on this tiny, yet important island.

The film actually gave me a sort of confused feeling. Here I was watching a movie about the Japanese soldiers preparing to do battle against the Americans and?I?m sympathizing with them? Aren?t these guys supposed to be evil? They?re not supposed to have emotions or family! Why are you playing these tricks on me, Mr. Eastwood? I found I actually cared more for the Japanese troops in this movie than the American soldiers in Flags of Our Fathers. These men were faced with certain death as the Americans rampaged onto their land and (most of them) stood their ground with honor.

I didn?t get a chance to check out the special features on this release, but there are a handful of featurettes and some image galleries on this 2 disc edition. If you were a fan of Flags of Our Fathers this is a must-see. While both films work well independently, they work a lot better when viewed together.

Watched this movie with a few friends. All I can say for people who just want action is:
Give it a chance, and watch the whole thing through. You'll have to wait a while before the first action scenes come up, but it's MOVIE.

It tells a STORY. In fact, it tells TWO stories, predominantly from the side of a level-headed Japanese officer and a common foot soldier.

I think I wouldn't be out of place to say that the direction was flawless! The movie had just the right balance of drama and action, which is a hard thing to pull off in war movies.

Definitely a must-see for fans of the genre!

Estupendo!

I enjoy the fact that a film maker has gone out of his way to tell a war story that is not one all about the united states. This is the second part to a two part movie series but this one tells the story from the perspective of the japaniese. From the trailer it looks amazing and i recognize so many of the actors and respect them as actors. I can not wait until next month when this movie comes out.
