Plot: An in-depth examination of the way that the Vietnam war affects the lives of people in a small industrial town in the USA.
Very strong! One of the Best movies ever. Great acting as always with Bobby D and Christopher Walken's fantastic performance. i guess it might have been his first major movie. first one i remember.
You can't deny the power of this film at the end. Coming out in 1978 (only several years after the Vietnam War) probably made it that more powerful and significant at the time. However, this movie was 3 hours of a lot of boredom and dull moments. The acting was great. I escpecially enjoyed Christopher Walken in this. I think they did a good job portraying the small town heros and what they went through. Aside from an emotional end, I just found the plot to be long winded and had troubles keeping interest in the film.
A bit too long, but everything fits together perfectly. I've watched this movie over and over again. Masterpiece.

A masterpiece of a movie, top Actor like Robert De Niro and many others. Great history. but not that kind i expected, i expected it was more like a Rambo movie or something, but its not at all. but its was great.
I did not see the end of this movie yet, but I thought it is quite intense. This is another movie from the time of the vietnam war, but instead of focusing on the war itself, we see before the war, a little during and after the war. No complaints to say about the acting, especially Deniro. Some scenes are not for the faint hearted.
Good Lord,How excellent is this movie!!??. I remembered things about half way through it and realized I had watched this as a child.HELLO.WTF were my parents think9ing?Anyway such a tremendous cast.God I love Christopher Walken,he is just smooth as hell, and dammmm diddy damm De Niro looks HOT with a beard.Anyway Excellent yet very emotional story of a great group of friends from a small town and the way the Vietnam war changed everything about them.Excellent movie,I can't give this anymore stars,I wish I could. If you have not seen this you need too.=)
This is truly one of the most powerful and moving, and emotionally shattering films that I have ever watched. Despite how it looks on paper, this film manages to be neither truly for or against war. It shows the effects of war on one specific demographic, how it permenantly alters their lives, and all that, but it is not preachy. It deserved the Oscars it got, and the ones it didn't as well. The acting, directing, cinematography, and music are flawless. Any complaints I have with the film are entirely personal and nit-picky, and thus won't be mentioned in detail. This is an absolutely timeless masterpiece, and one of the best films ever made.
Overall an impressive and powerful movie (with a beautiful photography), but I expected better performances from such list of good actors.
One of the best war movies i've seen so far, explaining the aftermath of a war. the acting is flawless, as well as the directing. A Masterpiece
epic film about the friendship between three men, the ones they leave behind and how they are forever altered after their ordeal in a Vietnamese prison camp. An emotionally shattering experience. One of the best films of the 70s
This movie is GREAT Ive always had a thing for War Movies. At the end of the movie it just shows how much war fucks up peoples lifes
An excellent film, however an entirely different animal than Apocalypse Now. This film focuses more on the people going to war and the ones back home, and how everything changes in 'Nam. The acting is superb, De Niro and Walken are brilliant, however the only reason i can't give this a 10 is because of a few scenes that are just too slow, mainly that damn wedding scene, my god.
this movie touched me so deeply i named my oldest child after the part Christopher... played... Nikki
They really cold have made this a little shorter. It does have some of the most intense scenes ever though.
This movie really shows how war srews people up. Starts with a bunch of mates living normal lives, ends... well you can imagine. Only problem i have with this movie is the wedding part is way too long.
christopher walken stuns me with this. how did he allow himself to be so monumentally mistypecast after this AMAZING performance? (de niro SO mails it in, by the way, IMHO).
This is the movie that gave Cimino the power to make Heaven's Gate and the ego to go along with it. This film is great (DeNiro, Walken, Streep, Cazale, and Savage are all amazing) and it looks great, too. And that brings me back to my point: are "great" directors made by great DP's and an awesome cast? You have to think that maybe Cimino is one of those guys. For further proof, see Sunchaser.
This is a hard movie to sit through and watch what happens to these characters, but it's great at the same time and captures the Vietnam War unlike any other war film. A must see.
Like The Sheltering Sky, the worst scene is the one which explains the title: the deer hunting in this movie is ludicrous. Otherwise a superb piece of filmmaking.
3+ hours? Come on! I know there may be some marit to this film, but I couldn't wait for it to be over, and in my book that doesn't deserve a high rating.
The Deer Hunter was probably the worst compiled setup of prioritizing in a film ever made. Why they spent 50 minutes preparing for an extremely tacky wedding and zoomed in on unnecessary symbolism and then spent barely 30 minutes in Vietnam which was (in my opinion) the most important and well done part of the movie is just beyond me... I guess that's why I don't make movies... my take on this film would have been about 30 minutes long total and several characters would have been left out entirely... the acting was very good though, I will say that much.
It has been over 13 years since I have first laid eyes on this film ( a whopping old age of 10 I was!) and to this day and beyond no other movie breaks down my emotionless barrier unlike The Deer Hunter. For myself this film was the stepping stone to great cinema. I am a life long diehard Deniro and Walken fan because of this film. It ranks on my TOP 10 Greatest Movies Ever and will never leave and maybe ascend a spot or two as I get older. The story of small town blue-collar iron/steel mill workers fascinates from the beginng credits of the early morning dusk settling down sleeping forests of green, to the tyrranical jungles of Vietnam, amd back again to the small town turned upside down by tragedy striking thousands of miles away. Hands down this movie deserved every Oscar appointed to it and Deniro was a fine canidate for BEST ACTOR. Walken hands down acted his heart out and as I write this I recieve chills and goosebumps at remeberances of scenes past. If there were a TEN STAR rating I would mark that a million fold. Every one: young, old, skinny, fat, handicapped, bald, blue, hermaphrodites, whatever you may be....much watch this film before crossing over to the unknown which this movie so proudly exhibits.
Jesus, where should i even begin. This movie runs on a bit, but it contains probably the best combination of acting and pure horror of vietnam i've ever seen.
